The Extraordinary Meeting of the Association of Quality Assurance Agencies of the Islamic World (QA-Islamic) was recently held in Astana, Kazakhstan on 4 May 2011. The Meeting was hosted by the National Accreditation Center, Kazakhstan and administered by the Secretariat of the AQAAIW Pro Tem Committee based at the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA). Representatives from 16 countries were present during the Meeting.

Prior to the Meeting was a special session to discuss on the QA-Islamic Proposed Constitution. The amended Constitution was later tabled during the Meeting and unanimously adopted by all members. The adoption of the Constitution subsequently saw the formal establishment of QA-Islamic and the election of its governing board.

The Chief Executive Officer of MQA, Dato’ Dr. Syed Ahmad Hussein, was given the mandate to lead the Executive Board as the first President of QA-Islamic. The President of the Egyptian National Authority for Quality Assurance and Accreditation of Education, Prof. Magdy Kassem, was elected as the Vice President. The Meeting elected other seven members of the Executive Board made up of representatives from Algeria, Bahrain, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Saudi Arabia, Sudan and Turkey.

The MQA was selected as the Secretariat of the Association and Prof Zita Mohd Fahmi, MQA's Deputy Chief Executive Officer, was appointed Executive Secretary.
